Although the Brown vs. Board of Education decision had been made Bate was still an all black school when Jewell started teaching there. Mrs. Lay recalls the Danville Schools integration process and her students feelings towards attending Danville High School. She discusses the affect the integration process had on teachers, racial situations that occurred during integration, and her belief that the Harrodsburg school system provided more opportunities for African American student involvement than the Danville school system.
