Description An account of the resource The History of Buckeye School Project deals with the education and social history of the Buckeye Community, a small unincorporated community that sprang up during the early 20th Century in Garrard County near Lancaster, Kentucky. Buckeye High School eventually closed down in the mid-1950s. The community and school never fully recovered from the Great Depression and was eventually dissolved due to changing political circumstances. The interviews in the collection comment extensively on community member and teacher experiences at Buckeye High School, as well as the lives of those who either returned to Buckeye after college or came from the community. Description An account of the resource Community Change in the Foothills of Appalachia interviews were conducted by Becky Denton in 2004-05 for the Kentucky Oral History Commission. Denton interviewed citizens who resided in Clark, Estill, Lincoln, Madison and Powell Counties, but grew up and lived and worked in either the foothills or mountains of Appalachia. The interviewees, which include a diverse sample of men, women and people of color, share stories of growing up in communities such as Bobtown, Cedar Grove, Irvine, Ravenna, and Winchester. Interview topics include, but are not limited to, discussions about family, education and work histories, health care, local industries, such as timber and railroads, farming experiences, and other related themes. In particular, the interviews capture the perceived social, political, and economic changes that took place in Central and Eastern Kentucky during the 20th and early 21st centuries. Description An account of the resource A small collection of interviews with individuals discussing incidents concerning the Baker-Howard Feud in Clay County, Kentucky. The origins of the feud are disputed, as one interviewee says it was started over a hog but others say over a random shooting, but the end result is certain: Bakers and Howards killed each other. Gim Howard and Tom Baker are most often cited. Several interviewees met Gim Howard. The feud started in 1898 and ended around 1940. The peak of the feud was in the early 1900s, around 1907. Augustus Howard, related to the Howard family in the feud, claims over 200 men lost their lives because of the feud. Other families were also involved. The purpose of the three projects was to document Kentucky politics by interviewing politically astute members of the local power structure (judges and school superintendents) and observers of local politics (newspaper editors and owners). School superintendents discuss Kentucky politics, education, their personal histories and careers, and their roles and influence in the social and political history of their counties. Almost every county is represented. A revisit of the project was launched in the fall of 2019 with the help of Kentucky Oral History Commission grant funding and the efforts of Nate Daniels and Crystal Allen-Daniels.
